Aftershave portraits is series of works which belongs to tradition of Transfigurative Painting. Berlin Aftershaves consist of 12 portraits of street and homeless men. These works are made on canvases on which surface is skin-colour print of selected fragments from video interview with these persons.
Since the shaving of the face came to use, it have had mainly a hygienic function and it was and is also a military ritual. In certain way shaving face is different to female make up: it doesn't cover the face, it takes away from the face, it uncovers the face. There is consideration that shaving is the male equivalent to the female make-up. It is clear, that shaving is not a pictorial, but more sculptural engagement. Like female make-up, shaving is one ritual of making-face performed in front of the mirror.
Each choosen person did received one piece of canvas, similar to material used for oil paintings. For certain period of time this fabric is used as a towel to clean and dry face during and after shaving. The traces of the face: blod, sweat, hear, skin, etc., are personal indexes that will maintain on the canvas as the genetic stamp that remain as main substance for Transfigurative portrait. This portraits will consist of one fragment of written interview text and genetic finger print of portrayed person. This are portraits that are not figurative or iconic sing based on mimesis or mirror-image, but a representation obtained by contact and produced by touch which is the representation based on metonymy, as for example in vera icona or VeronicaÕs Shroud.
As a sorce for portrait there will be video interview with the each person which is based on getting concrete informationÕs about past and present situation from persons life. This video interview will be the document and basic info material for production of portrait, and it will serve as narative information and documentation of portrayed person.
